Branching helps you create smarter, more responsive surveys by changing the survey path based on the answers respondents give.

Instead of showing every respondent the same fixed list of questions, branching allows you to direct respondents to specific questions depending on the options they select. This makes your survey more relevant, more personal, and easier to complete.

For example, if you ask respondents whether they have used your product before, you may want people who answer Yes to continue to product experience questions, while people who answer No skip those questions and move directly to a different section. This prevents respondents from seeing questions that do not apply to them.

When used correctly, branching can help you collect more valuable and unbiased survey data. Respondents only answer questions that match their situation, experience, or previous selections. This makes your survey feel more natural and interactive, while also improving the quality of the responses you receive.

Branching is also commonly referred to as skip logic because it allows the survey to skip over certain questions and move respondents directly to another question based on their answer.

Example

Imagine you have the following survey:

Question 1: Have you used our product before?
Question 2: How often do you use our product?
Question 3: Which feature do you use the most?
Question 4: Why have you not used our product yet?

You may want respondents who answer Yes to continue to Question 2, because Questions 2 and 3 are about product usage.

However, respondents who answer No should not answer product usage questions. Instead, they should skip directly to Question 4.

In this case, you can configure branching on Question 1 so that:

If the respondent selects “No”, go to Question 4.

This keeps the survey relevant for each respondent and helps you collect more accurate feedback.

 

How to configure branching in Enquete

Follow the steps below to add branching to a survey question.

 

Step 1: Open the survey you want to edit

Go to the survey you want to configure branching for.

Click Edit to open the survey in the survey builder.

Once the survey builder opens, you

 be able to view and edit the questions in your survey.

 

Step 2: Select the question you want to apply branching to

In the survey builder, select the multiple-choice question where you want to apply the branching rule.

Branching is applied to answer options inside a question. This means you first need to choose the question that contains the answer option that should trigger the branching behavior.

For example, if you want respondents who select No to skip to another question, select the multiple-choice question that contains the No option.

 

Step 3: Open the Advanced tab

After selecting the question, you will see two tabs:

Main
Advanced

Click Advanced.

The Advanced tab contains additional settings and features for the selected question.

 

Step 4: Click Configure Branching

Scroll down inside the Advanced tab until you find Configure Branching.

Click Configure Branching.

A branching configuration panel will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. This is where you can create and manage the branching rule for the selected question.

 

Step 5: Set the branching condition

Inside the branching panel, go to the Conditions section.

Here, you can define when the branching rule should apply.

Select Equals as the condition.

The Equals condition means that the branching rule will only apply when the respondent selects the answer option you choose in the next step.

 

Step 6: Select the answer option that should trigger the branching

Under Values, select the answer option that should activate the branching rule.

The selected value tells the survey builder:

If the respondent selects this option, apply the branching rule.

For example, if you select the option No, the survey will apply the branching rule when a respondent chooses No as their answer.

You can also select more than one option.

To select multiple options, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click the options you want to include.

When multiple options are selected, the branching rule will apply when the respondent selects any of those options.

After selecting the options, you will see the selected values displayed at the bottom of the values section.

 

Step 7: Choose the target action

Next, go to the Targets section.

This is where you define what should happen when the respondent selects one of the answer options you selected above.

Choose Go to question.

This tells the survey that when the branching condition is met, the respondent should be sent to another question in the survey.

 

Step 8: Select the target question

After choosing Go to question, go to Target Question.

Click the dropdown field.

You will see a list of available questions that the respondent can jump to.

Select the question you want the respondent to go to when the branching rule is triggered.

For example, if you want respondents to skip Questions 3 and 4 and continue from Question 5, select Question 5 as the target question.

Important note about target questions

You can only select a question that comes after the current question.

This means branching can only move respondents forward in the survey. It cannot send respondents backward to a previous question.

 

Step 9: Save the branching rule

After selecting the condition, value, target action, and target question, click Save.

The branching rule will now be applied to the question.

 

Best practices for using branching

Before adding branching to your survey, plan the path you want respondents to follow. This helps you avoid confusing survey flows.

Use branching when a question is only relevant to certain respondents. Avoid adding too many branching rules unless they are necessary.

Make sure your target question makes sense based on the answer selected by the respondent.

Always test your survey before publishing it. Complete the survey as a respondent and select different answer options to confirm that the branching behaves as expected.
